How Much Does a Plumber Cost in Rochester, NY?

“How much is this going to cost me?” is usually the second thing people say when they call us – right after “there’s water everywhere.”

It’s a fair question, and honestly, a lot of plumbing companies dance around it. We’d rather just lay it out. Below are the price ranges we typically see for jobs around Rochester, based on what actually shows up on invoices – not made-up “starting at” numbers meant to get you to call.

How plumbers in Rochester typically charge

There are really two ways this works. Some jobs get quoted as a flat price – you’re told the number before anyone touches a wrench, and that’s what you pay. Others, usually more complex or open-ended jobs, get billed hourly, somewhere in the $95 to $180 range depending on the company and the time of day.

Almost every plumber in the area, us included, also charges a trip fee just to come look at the problem – usually $50 to $100. If you go ahead with the repair, that fee usually gets rolled into the total instead of tacked on separately.

What people around here actually pay, job by job

Every house is different, so take these as a starting point, not gospel. A 1920s home off Park Avenue with original galvanized pipe is going to cost more than a 2015 build in Penfield with everything up to code.

JobWhat you’ll likely pay
Leaky faucet$125 – $300
Clogged toilet$100 – $250
Drain clog / snaking$150 – $450
Sewer backup$250 – $800+
Water heater repair$200 – $600
New water heater, installed$1,200 – $3,500
Frozen pipe thaw$200 – $500
Burst pipe repair$300 – $1,000+
Slab leak (find + fix)$500 – $3,000+
Garbage disposal$150 – $450

The wide ranges aren’t us being vague – a burst pipe in an unfinished basement is a different job than one hidden inside a finished ceiling with drywall to patch afterward.

Nights and weekends cost more, and here’s why

If your water heater dies at 2am on a Sunday, don’t expect the same rate as a Tuesday afternoon call. Most companies charge somewhere between 1.5 and 2 times their normal rate after hours, because it means paying a technician to drop what they’re doing and come in.

That said, not every plumbing problem is a “call right now” situation. A slow drain can usually wait until morning. A pipe actively spraying water into your basement can’t. If you’re not sure which one you’ve got, it’s worth calling and just asking – a decent plumber will tell you honestly whether it can wait, instead of talking you into an emergency visit you didn’t need.

Why one plumber quotes $150 and another quotes $400 for the same job

A few things move the number around more than anything else:

How bad it actually is. A leak you caught early costs less to fix than one that’s been dripping into your subfloor for three months.

How hard it is to get to. Pipes running through a finished wall or under a slab take longer to reach, and that time shows up on the bill.

What’s already in your walls. Rochester has a lot of older housing stock – plenty of homes still have galvanized steel or cast iron that’s decades past its intended lifespan. Working around that takes more time than modern PEX or copper.

Parts. A standard 40-gallon water heater costs a lot less than a high-efficiency tankless unit, and that difference gets passed along.

A few honest tips before you hire anyone

Get the estimate in writing before work starts – verbally agreeing to “somewhere around $300” and then getting a bill for $550 is a common complaint we hear about other companies, and it’s avoidable.

Ask directly whether the trip fee counts toward the repair cost if you move forward. Some companies keep it separate no matter what.

Be a little skeptical of quotes that come in far below everyone else’s. Sometimes it’s a genuinely good deal – but sometimes it means unlicensed work, a subcontractor with no insurance, or a “surprise” second invoice once the job is already torn open. We wrote a separate guide on telling the difference between cheap and reliable if you want to go deeper on that.

And check that whoever you hire is actually licensed and insured in New York. It’s a two-minute question that protects you if something goes wrong.

What we do differently

We quote the job before we start it, not after. No dispatch surprises, no “well, once we opened it up” pricing changes without a conversation first. If a job turns out to be bigger than expected once we’re inside the wall, you’ll hear about it – and get a number – before we keep going.

We’re based in Rochester and cover the surrounding area, including Greece, Irondequoit, and Penfield, with someone on call 24/7 for the stuff that genuinely can’t wait.
